NEW YORK, NY – June 29, 2026 – Following its acclaimed national broadcast on PBS, "Inside High Noon," the documentary written and directed by John Mulholland and produced under Robert Jordan Productions, is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime. Narrated by Matthew Rhys and edited by Richard Zampella, the film brings the remarkable story behind the making of the 1952 film "High Noon," starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly, to a wider audience.
"Inside High Noon" explores the making of the 1952 classic and the political turmoil surrounding its production during the McCarthy era. The documentary examines the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), the Hollywood blacklist, the persecution of screenwriter Carl Foreman, the courage of Gary Cooper, and the larger struggle between artistic integrity and political fear.
On-camera participants in the documentary include President Bill Clinton, King Albert of Monaco, Brian Garfield, Jonathan Foreman, Tim Zinnemann, Maria Cooper, Lee Clark Mitchell, Stephen Prince, and M.Z. Ribalow, drawing together political figures, historians, critics, and family members of those at the center of the "High Noon" story.
The film continues Mulholland's distinguished body of documentary work as writer and director, which includes "Sergeant York: Of God and Country," narrated by Liam Neeson, and "Cooper & Hemingway: The True Gen," narrated by Sam Waterston and named a New York Times Critics' Pick. Like those acclaimed productions, "Inside High Noon" combines historical scholarship with compelling storytelling to explore individuals whose actions shaped American cultural history.
Building on the success and critical reception of "Inside High Noon," Mulholland is completing work on "High Legend," a cinematic graphic novel presented in screenplay form and based directly on his documentary. The project will be published by Colossal New York, with a screenplay-format narrative written by Mulholland and artwork by Philippe Antonetti. The graphic novel will be released as a six-part series.
Both "Inside High Noon" and "High Legend" confront the legacy of HUAC and the Hollywood blacklist, dramatizing a period when fear, politics, and public accusation threatened careers and lives. Through the stories of Carl Foreman, Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, and the artists behind "High Noon," "High Legend" expands the documentary's themes into a cinematic graphic narrative about conscience, integrity, and the cost of standing alone.
At its heart, both works ask what democracy requires of individuals when fear, silence, and political pressure threaten truth, freedom of expression, and moral responsibility. The story of "High Noon" remains a powerful reminder that democratic societies depend not only on institutions, but on the willingness of ordinary citizens to defend principle when it is most at risk.
At the center of both works is the story of Carl Foreman, whose refusal to cooperate with congressional investigators resulted in his blacklisting from Hollywood. His struggle became inseparable from the story of "High Noon," a film about a lone individual standing by his principles when others choose silence or self-preservation. Through Foreman's story, Mulholland examines enduring questions about courage, citizenship, freedom of expression, and moral responsibility.
"High Noon" is also one of the films discussed in John Mulholland's first volume of "Classic Film Chatter: Politics in Film," part of the Classic Film Chatter series published by Monde Ciné Classique and releasing this summer. "Politics in Film" speaks to the ways cinema reflects and shapes political thought, public opinion, ideology, civic responsibility, and moral courage through the lens of classic motion pictures. Future volumes in the series will explore additional genres and themes, including Westerns and Courtroom Dramas, continuing Mulholland's examination of how great films illuminate the social, cultural, and political issues of their time.
Publication details for "High Legend" will be announced by Colossal New York.
