Houston is greener than its reputation. The city counts 366 parks, more than 200 green spaces and more than 125 miles of hike-and-bike trails. Grab a blanket, a bottle of something sparkling and your best sunglasses.

Memorial Park

At more than 1,400 acres, it's one of the largest urban parks in the country. Find a shady spot near the trails and watch the city's runners go by while you do absolutely nothing.

Hermann Park

Paddle boats on McGovern Lake, the serene Japanese Garden and wide lawns perfect for a long, lazy lunch. Close to the Museum District if you want culture after.

Buffalo Bayou Park

A 160-acre ribbon of green along the bayou with skyline views that make every photo look professional. Golden hour here is unbeatable.

Discovery Green

Twelve acres right downtown, with a lake, lawns and regular events. Ideal for a lunchtime escape.

Houston Botanic Garden

Spread across 132 acres, this is the place for a romantic, flower-filled afternoon.

Levy Park

Small (about six acres), stylish and full of life in Upper Kirby, with a lawn made for spreading out.

Worth the drive

Brazos Bend State Park, about 5,000 acres southwest of the city, is famous for wildlife (yes, including alligators, so keep your distance). Galveston Island State Park gives you beach and bay in one trip.

The Glam picnic list

  • A washable blanket and a few cushions
  • Fresh fruit, a cheese board, pastries from your favorite bakery
  • Something sparkling (check each park's rules first)
  • Sunscreen and bug spray
  • A small speaker, kept low
  • A trash bag. Leave it prettier than you found it.
