Houston's climate is humid subtropical, which is a polite way of saying it's warm most of the year. The region gets about 47 inches of rain a year and has more than 90 days at 90°F or higher. But there's more variety than the jokes suggest.
Almost Summer (March to May)
The best weather of the year. Highs in the 70s and 80s, wildflowers along the highways, rodeo in March and patio brunches every weekend. Spring storms can roll in fast, so keep an umbrella handy.
Summer (June to August)
Hot. Average July highs are about 93°F with humidity that makes it feel hotter. Life moves indoors, to pools and to the Galveston beaches. Hurricane season officially runs June 1 to November 30, so every Houstonian keeps an eye on the Gulf.
Still Summer (September to October)
Technically fall. Practically summer. Until that first glorious cold front arrives and the whole city celebrates like it won the lottery.
Christmas (November to February)
Mild and lovely, with January lows around 40°F. A few chilly snaps a year, holiday lights everywhere and the occasional day when Houstonians wear every coat they own at once.
