Rodeo Chic: How Houston Does Western Without the Costume

Twenty days every March, the whole city goes Western. Here's how to do it like you mean it.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the largest livestock exhibition and rodeo in the world, and it runs for 20 days every March. In 2025 it drew a record crowd of about 2.7 million people. That's a lot of people in boots, and a lot of chances to be seen.

Start with the boots

Everything builds from the boots. A classic cognac pair goes with everything; a white or bone boot reads modern and fresh. Break them in before the rodeo, not during it. You'll be walking more than you think.

The difference between rodeo chic and rodeo costume is restraint. Choose one statement: a fringe jacket, a turquoise cuff, a great hat or a tooled belt. Pair it with modern basics: a slip dress, crisp jeans, a white tee, a denim mini.

Denim on denim, done right

The Texas tuxedo is back. Keep the washes different (dark jeans, light jacket), add a belt to break it up and finish with boots.

Hats: the etiquette

If you're going to wear a cowboy hat, wear it with confidence and keep it simple. Felt for cooler days, straw when the sun is out. And a good rule of thumb: buy it from someone who'll fit it to your head.

Day to night

Afternoon at the carnival? Denim shorts, boots and a gingham top. Evening concert in the stadium? Swap in a slip dress, add the jacket and a red lip. Done.
